Julius Willis in The Last Unicorn
tuesday, november 12, 2002
Julius Willis is listed in the credits as a hunter/bandit. Somehow along
the way, he must have changed his role to The Invisible Man. I don't remember
this character in the cartoon version, but thank god I had seen the cartoon,
otherwise I wouldn't have had any idea what was going on. Ok, the play
starts out in this forest, with a girl in purple tights who is supposed
to be a white unicorn. She has a little crystal horn on her head to show
that she is in fact this unicorn and not a dancer wearing PURPLE tights.
I personally thought white tights would better represent a white unicorn,
but alas , I am not in the theater. Sillouhettes of people are in the
background singing something. I was sure one of them must be Julius. Not
until the end of the play did I realize he was the Invisible Man, so for
all I know he could have been standing center stage at this point. People
start dancing and singing and
shrieking, there is this butterfly girl who yells a lot, there is also
something about harpies and a Red Bull that is portrayed by six guys in
red tights, and there is a lot of walking in circles to represent walking
hundreds of miles. And the spastic guy named Shmendrick. He has to be
seen to be believed.
Then it's intermission and I realize I have yet to see Julius in the
play. Can I somehow have gone to the wrong theater? Could this play possibly
be in production at two simultaneous locations? I saw his picture in the
lobby. His name is in the program. Then it hit me. He's The Invisible
Man.
Probably the best interpretation of the Invisible Man that I have ever
not seen!!
So Bravo Julius, you take not being seen to a new elevation! I had
roses to give you but I couldn't see you as you were still in character
at
the end of the show.
