Audigy Sound Card-The Perfect Digital Music Gift!

It's not every day that gamelord.org gets a chance to talk to one of the biggest characters in the Video Game Industry. Hell, we're lucky not to get sued or shut down on a daily basis. This is unquestionably the highest honor for our magazine and I don't have enough pages to give the man the praise that he so deserves. He is Kelly Flock and he is the President of 989 Studios.

In his 16 years of industry involvement, Kelly Flock has worked the video game circuit and his impressive resume shows that he has worked at most of the top companies including Electronic Arts, Activision, LucasArts, Trimark Interactive and, of course, 989 Studios. Formerly Sony Interactive Studios America, 989 Studios is a publisher best known for its Twisted Metal Series, Gameday series and now, Syphon Filter.

To say, Kelly Flock is respected by his employees is an understatement. He is not only respected by his employees, he is definitely well loved. If you're not an employee, you either hate him or you love him. One thing you will always see is that he has a bigger heart than he will ever admit to. He is also the king of the pranksters and in interviews, his honest and politically incorrect approach to the questions makes him the most notorious President around. A controversial interview last year with Next Generation Magazine pushed him farther into Super Stardom as he went on to assault EA's Madden Football, a direct competitor to 989 Studios' NFL Gameday. We can only hope to have a more controversial interview than the one printed in Next Generation.

One of the things you learn when you field questions for the President of a company, is that you won't get many responses as everyone is worried about their job. Although we didn't get many, the questions are as follows:

Hi Kelly, it's proven that 989 Studios has become one of the top publishers for the Sony Playstation. Are you satisfied with the success of the Studios or did you believe that your Studio would do better than you had?

The studio did much better than I did.

We know that 989 Studios is owned by Sony, however, the Dreamcast by Sega has shown early success and Publishers such as EA have already jumped on board. I do not expect any one from Sony to say that the Dreamcast will continue to succeed, but being an industry veteran you no doubt realize the problems Sega will face in the upcoming months for the Dreamcast. Bernie Stolar couldn't save them from the problems that were never eradicated from Sega. In your opinion, do you think Sega can overcome their problems and what are the main problems they face at Sega?

I really don't have any idea what you are talking about.

As of late, 989 Studios has become known as the sequel company by the many game publications. Some magazine editors have gone so far as to say, "No More Sequels". Although it's definitely important for the sports titles such as NFL Gameday to release every year, many non-sports games in their 4th and 5th iteration are being released by 989 Studios to the playstation. It is feasible to believe that the release of these sequels will strengthen the franchise of the title. It is also feasible to believe that most of the consumers will forget any bad sequels when the PSX2 versions of these games are released. What is it that you say to the editors when this question arises?

Here's another 989 jacket, so shut the fuck up.

In many ways, Electronic Arts is the only competitor to 989 Studios. You, of course, have once worked for the publishing giant and still have friends that are employed by them. In the Next Generation interview you slam them along with Madden Football. Is there any real animosity with EA or is it just misunderstood fun you're poking at them?

They really weren't a publishing giant when I worked for them. That all happened later, and there's probably a direct correlation. Actually, I went after EA like a rabid dog because just days before that fabled interview some people at EA had once again attempted to raid 989 development, and they were trying to steal one of our developers. So I was mad. Other than 989, EA was my favorite company to work for. Okay, other than Lucasfilm Games and 989, EA was my favorite company to work for. I think the current senior management is first rate, and I especially appreciate how smart, competitive, and rich they are. I think of EA as a company that everyone is either coming from or going to. I still think the product quality went into a steep decline for several years, but it's recovering. I prefer our sports lineup to EA's, but by no means are their games as weak as they were a few years ago. Some of the best people are in that company, and for the most part they still have a sense of humor ('cause they still speak to me). Interestingly, the EA employees who took the greatest offense at my interview have never met me, but I understand they would like to. In a dark alley. Alone.

One of the top members of Sony has announced that they are working on the Playstation 3 chip. Although we are confused as to why anything like this would ever be mentioned before the actual release of the Playstation 2, are there benefits to bringing this information out to the public so early?

Even if it's true, I don't think it's going to make any difference to the success of PlayStation 2. I don't see any benefit to an early announcement, but it wouldn't surprise me to hear that Sony is working on advanced technologies that won't come to market for years.

What is most impressive is that during your Presidency of Sony Interactive Studios / 989 Studios, you have completely taken a company crippled with problems and transformed it into a company that is at the top of all Publishing companies for the Playstation. Do you find that there were some key moments that were vital to 989 Studios success or was it mostly a combined effort and rebuilding?

We were lucky as hell. Sony Computer Entertainment's support for the first three years of our game development helped create an incredible body of intellectual property to build on. The key moment for me was the back to back release of Syphon Filter on PlayStation and Everquest on PC. We're the only publisher EVER to have the number one PC and the number on PlayStation game, and to have them be different games.

Donald Vercelli or "Verch" as the women like to call him is now back from his venture into the land of Trip Hawkins. We know you didn't hire him back for his charm, did you hire him back because you needed someone to beat down at Foosball?

Actually, we wouldn't hire "Verch" back under any circumstances. We strongly recommended against Verant hiring him, but I understand he had such great dirt on Smedley and McQuaid that they had no choice. They pleaded for us to house him in our building as they wanted him as far away from San Diego as possible. We very reluctantly agreed to give him a small, windowless office with the noisiest air conditioning available provided he kept his uncontrollable cursing in check. Well, as you can see from the fine undercover work of the Gamelord staff, Verch managed to play by the rules for all of three days. We popped champagne when we successfully foisted him on 3D0. His nickname ought to be "bad penny."

We understand that you enjoy Teppan restaurants in Japan, specifically in Tokyo. These are the restaurants where they cook food right in front of you. We also understand that you are fond of the whole shell crabs they serve at these restaurants. Can you share any experiences with whole shell crabs and give our readers advice on how one would eat a whole shell crab?

This actually a quite funny story. Like many Americans, I know very little about Japanese etiquette. One of the producers on the trip told me one way to show your appreciation for the Teppan style of cooking is to spit your food out in the direction of the grill, contaminating as many other items as you can. A partially cooked soft shell crab, along with a large quantity of beer, makes for an excellent projectile.

Julius Willis wants to know when you are going to open up 989 Films and let Julius run the Studio?

I've seen Julius's work on public access, and it's filth filth filth!

Hunter Luisi is one of your Producers and our readers would like to know if you think he is ever going to get married and who you believe he would get married to?

I have it on good authority that he is about to elope with Maria.

This question or questions have come many times in so many forms, such as the Luisi's? or what are you thinking when you hire a Luisi to work for you? so I will list the non-redundant Luisi questions here and see if you'll answer them?

1.
What embarrassing photo does Hunter Luisi have of you that is keeping him from getting fired?
I'm sorry. He won't let me discuss it.

2.
If you start your own company do the Luisi's have to come along?
Only if they make me an offer I can't refuse.

3.
How many games does it take for Hunter or Seth Luisi to have cancelled under him before he is put back in the testing department?
Well, we've only cancelled one. Of course, it's always the same one and we've done it two or three times.

4.
If you don't actually work, do you get moved up to Seth Luisi status?
Hmmm, kind of a mean question. Seth works harder than a lot of others who spend most of their day arranging contributions to the Gamelord site.

If you and Molly Smith got into a fight, who would win?

Molly. Absolutely. But I'd probably get real excited.

Why do employees call the 989 San Diego studio, "Sanctuary"?

That was before Julius relocated down there.

We know you like jokes and you like to get your employees into confrontations. Who is the most evil... Alan Becker, Connie Booth or Jonathan Beard?

Well, when I see Al Pacino in Devil's Advocate I think of Allan. When I watched Heather in Blair Witch I thought of Connie. Jay is, as everyone knows, my favorite, and I think of him when I see the farmer in Babe.

When you talk to Jay on the phone do you put on a pair of rubber boots?

Yes, I kept the ones I used for Smedley. I have to send them out for cleaning whenever he says "awesome."

What game, if any, do you consider a Franchise killer from 989 Studios?

I don't really understand the question. Do you mean a game that killed a franchise (Jet Moto 2), or a game that dominates it's franchise so no one else can get in (Twisted Metal), or a game that killed someone else's franchise (like Everquest nearly did to UO)

One of the most impressive things about you is the fact that you are a gamer. This is not necessarily true of other Presidents from other Publishers. We'd like to know what is your favorite game and what type of game do you like to play?

My favorite right now is CTR. I like games I can play with my kids so my favorites are four player. Poy Poy, Bomberman. By myself I like NHL Faceoff, Supercross Circuit, Rally Cross, and one or two others.

Was Ben Harrison crazier than Tom Tobey?

At one time or another, everyone associated with Blasto went crazier than anyone else associated with it.

Are you Matt Duncan's father?

No, I've met his father and it's Mr. Fantastic.

We understand that you are a big hockey fan. It's almost certain that the Los Angeles Kings with the addition of Ziggy Palffy will win the Stanley Cup (barring any injuries, of course). Why is it that when I play the LA Kings in NHL Faceoff they suck?

'Cause Kelly Ryan is an Orange County, Duck-loving S.O.B. who doesn't listen to me, and Solwerks is led by a huge Philadelphia fan. Go Kings.

Thanks to everyone who submitted questions for the interview, hopefully, we get a chance to talk to Kelly later on. He is a good sport and we wish him well in his future.
