If
you don't know Tricia Gray then you aren't in the Video
Game Industry. She is the current Communications Director
at Gamers.com. She has a reputation to be wild like an untamed
horse and her success has given her the power to let her
hair down (and more). Her rise to super stardom reads like
a fairy tale told to young kids before they are put to sleep
for the night.
She
was born, Tricia "Xiaopeng" Gray, in a city called Oakland,
which is located in the Northern part of California. At
a young age, her parents decided to move her to the Philippines
so she could be learn the talent of "hamming" things up.
After some brief lessons, her and her family moved to the
Southern part of the USA. In her biography, she states,
"I grew up in Virginia Beach, VA and Charleston, SC." She
was filled with energy and ambition. The life in Virginia
and Charleston was not the life she was looking for and
at the tender age of 16, she realized that her dreams could
only be fulfilled in California. She packed up her bags
and moved to San Fran at age 17 to pursue a career in video
games and skateboarding.
While
she attended school in San Francisco, she landed a job on
a local Television Show for Video Games called Video Game
Slams. To this day, she plays a character called Agt. Nemore
who is supposed to be 14 and reviews games. With the help
of Video Game Slams, she interviewed with Sega. After a
brief period at SEGA, she joined Sony and ran into a character
named The Game Lord. Eidos stole her away and then transformed
her into the PR Manager of Eidos Interactive. While at Eidos,
Rockstar Games, known for their rowdiness, fell in love
with her and knew that she was the perfect person to fit
the image of Rockstar Games. Her career took her to New
York but this VP of PR could not stand to be away from San
Francisco for too long. She returned home to Northern California
and currently works at Gamer.com as Communications Director.
She also co-runs the record label SUb Standard Records and
currently attends college for pre-med. Her story is still
being written as we speak and her questions start here.
|
| You
have a very successful and respected career. Did you always
believe that you would come this far? Did you have any fears
of not being successful? |
|
To be honest I never thought that I would end up where I am
at right now. I knew I wanted to work in the video game industry
but I thought I would go to med school eventually and be a
doctor. One way or another I knew I would become successful.
I had to, no one would be taking care of me, my parents didn't
want anything to do with me, so I had to make sure that I
could survive by myself. Success is how you perceive yourself,
so yes I do have fears of not being successful, because to
me being unsuccessful would mean I was homeless again.
|
| We
know that Julius Willis let you down, but you have always wanted
to be in Product Development for Video Games. [we're plugging
you here.] Is this still a dream of yours to work in Development
or have you grown out of that? |
|
Yes, it still is a dream of mine to be designing video games.
I have written several design docs and I briefly started my
own development team 2 years ago. Believe it or not it was
an all girl dev team, but unfortunately no one wants to work
for peanuts, so they all quit to work on their real jobs.
Yeah, Mr. Willis did let me down. But someone told me that
he was scared I would start a coup de tat against him.
|
| You
are definitely one of the most popular characters in the Video
Game industry. Every magazine editor in the US knows you and
every person in the industry knows you. Don't you feel that
its about time that you set up an autograph signing booth at
Electronic Expos? |
|
What about a kissing booth? Just kidding!!! I don't think
anyone would want that, including myself.
|
| Just
about every company in which "boys" are found, there will always
be "watercooler" talks about you. If there was ONE male in the
industry that you'd like to see talked bout as much as AND in
the same way as you, who would it be? |
|
People talk about me at the water cooler? That's fucked up.
Hmm.. if there was one male, I think it would be.. that's
a hard question… I don't know I haven't met anyone in the
industry that I went nuts for, you know? If I find someone
I'll let you know.
|
| One
of our readers asks, "Did you have any crushes on any of the
"men" during your time here at Sony?" |
|
Yeah I had several innocent crushes on a few people there,
until I had to work with them, which changed my mind quick.
|
| What
is your infatuation with Ecommerce? |
|
It's so easy, I don't have to go outside and deal with stupid
people. Don't get my wrong, I am not a recluse, I like going
out. Ordering online is just so convenient.
|
|
It
took us awhile but we finally found out that you DO wear underwear.
You also purchase this underwear from Azzuma.com, which is
extremely expensive. Our readers are dying to know, do you
have a rich boyfriend who buys you $140 bras?
|
|
Holy Shit! How the hell did you find that out? My boyfriend
doesn't purchase these things for me. I buy them myself.
|
| Why
did you leave the gaming industry? |
|
Did I? I am still in the gaming industry; I am just on the
online public relations section. I might be working on a game
project soon, plus I still review games.
|
| Did
you ever sleep with any at Sega? Sony? Eidos? Take2? |
|
Once I slept over Ron Allen's (Sony) house cause we (Ron,
Sam Villanueva eidos/crystal dynamic, and me) were playing
Puzzle fighter and Tokyo Highway Battle all night.
|
| Have
you ever been arrested fighting?
|
|
Ummm, yes but I was never charged.
|
| Apparently,
Everytime one of your friend's asks you out, you get mad. Do
you like men and why don't you like men? |
|
Men are all right, as
a matter of fact I FINALLY found a really awesome guy. I just
hate it when I become friends with a guy and he takes me being
nice to him the wrong way. It pisses me off, cause I think
that some guys are being cool with me cause they respect me
and in the end it all they really wanted was to get with me.
I am not saying this happens to me all the time, but there
have been several people that have befriended me with wrong
intentions.
|
| Julius
Willis' asks, "hi, my name is unimportant. if i were to win
a date with you, Tric, what kind of fun time could i expect?
please compare the 'date with you' to a video-game or type of
game." |
|
Julius, you are so weird.
Anyway, it depends on the type of person that I am about to
go out with, if they liked the same type of music I was into,
I would see about going to a show/concert, or if they liked
the same type of cars I liked, we would go to the races, etc…
but the date would always end with eating Ice Cream and if
we were in Sunnyvale, going to the arcade. I don't know what
type of game that would be compared to. But if we had to PLAY
a game while of the date it would be Puzzle Fighter or Chess.
You can really tell how someone is by the way they play those
games.
|
| Our
readers want to know, if you could be a comicbook superhero
or superheroine, who would you be? would your answer be different
if we included the world of video-game characters? what would
your 'battle cry' be? which superhero or superheroine would
be your partner? if you really had superpowers, would you be
a villain or a hero in this non-superhero world? |
|
I would be Aspen, the
heroine from Fathom. If I could be a video game character
I would be Sakura from Street Fighter Alpha II. My battle
cry would be, "You are such a sucker!" I would want to make
The Danger Girls and Fairchild from Gen 13 my team. Hmmm…
would I be a villain or a superhero? That would depend on
how you look at it… I am sure the KKK, antiracists groups,
the 700 club and some governmental groups would think I was
a villain.
|
| Julius
wants to know, "what is your all time favorite game? no video-games,
please." |
|
Mahjongg or Chess
|
| Our
readers want to know, "Would you explain what tossing salad
tastes like?" |
|
I dunno you should ask
Julius, I heard that he would know. Just kidding Julius.
|
| If
you had the chance to get it on with someone in 989 Studios,
who would it be? (This includes MIS, San Diego and Santa Monica
divisions, not excluding Ken Yamada) |
|
Beck, he played at the
Sony party, so I think he counts, right?
|
| There
is a curse on Julius and that curse is that he won't do the
"nasty" until the next Millennium. Will you help Julius break
his curse???? |
|
No
|
| Do
you think Blondes have more fun? Or more importantly, are blondes
more fun? |
|
My boyfriend is blonde
and he is really fun.
|
| in
your experiences with 989 studios, eidos, and that company in
new york, where did you meet the person, if anyone, you would
not ever ever want to work with again? (the name of the company
will suffice, you don't have to name the person) who have you
met that would or could change the future of video games? was
there anyone you've met in the industry that you wish you had,
in retrospect, married? more importantly, was there anyone whom
you thought would've looked even finer as a blonde? |
|
I think there is at least
one person in each company I have worked with that I disliked
and wouldn't want to work with them again. (One particular
person at Sony) As far as meeting anyone in the industry,
I honestly think Sam Houser (from Rockstar) will eventually
change some aspects the video game industry and there are
a handful of other people that I have met with so much talent
and vision, I think the industry is going to be surprised
in the near future. I have never met anyone in the gaming
industry that I would marry. And as for the blonde question…..
I think Julius should change his hair color back, what's wrong
with you man, aren't you proud to be Filipino? Maybe Wilson
Lee would look cool as a blonde, just kidding, Wilson leave
your hair color as is!
|
| In
which universe would you rather live in, the star trek universe,
the star wars universe, the matrix universe, or the 989 san
diego studios...oops, i'm sorry, i thought this was the 'chad
okada interview'. please omit the last universe, ms. dish, and
answer at your leisure. if any, why? (you may add your own universe
to the question if you don't find your favorite one listed,
though that would be hard to imagine) |
|
I would live in the Star
Wars Universe. This universe is more stable (except for when
Lord Vadar wants to blow up a planet) and self contained than
that of Star Trek; I am not constantly traveling like the
Star Trek crew, I actually have a planet I go home to and
chill when there isn't an evil overlord trying to destroy
things. I would rather be a jedi than an engineer or doctor
or a counselor wearing tight clothes falling in love with
androids, no sorry that was Tasha and she died! I must say
though Next Generation is the best era of Star Trek.
|
| In
view of what's happening locally, countrywide, and worldwide,
do you think the human race will make it, meaning 'survive',
to the third millenium? would you want to see the third millenium
if it meant having to live a thousand years in a bionic, battle
angel alita-style body? |
|
I have no idea whether we will survive to the third
Millennium; to be honest at the rate we are going I am very
doubtful. If I could be a bionic battle angel like Alita,
I would be psyched, sign me up! To be serious though, a lot
of things that happened this year really made me upset with
human kind. Children bringing guns to school to kill and Woodstock…
what's up with that? There were 9 reported rapes and only
1 arrest. I was watching some of the chaos that was happening
and I couldn't believe the shit I was seeing. Boys were sexually
molesting girls who wanted to go topless. There was a girl
sitting on top of a guy's shoulders to see the band play and
4 or 5 guys went up to her and grabbed her tits. Whatever
happened to respect? Just because someone wants to not wear
clothing or wears something a bit revealing, doesn't give
anyone else the right to violate their bodies. There is so
much bullshit and there always will be bullshit, I just hope
future parents can give enough love and teach children about
respecting LIFE in general.

| What's
better than chocolate? |

Ice cream
|
| Brandon
Meyer asks, "How did such a fine ass female like yourself go
out with such dork like me?" |
|
Brandon Meyer… man I was this kid's make out partner
in the 7th grade. He had a cool BMX and a Bart Simpson watch.
|
| It's
almost certain that the Los Angeles Kings with the addition
of Ziggy Palffy will win the Stanley Cup (barring any injuries,
of course). You're a Kings fan, right? |
|
You are going to kill me, but I like the Bruins……
|
| Credits |
|
Thanks to everyone who submitted
questions for the interview, hopefully, we get a chance to
talk to Tric later on. Although she's not a Kings Fan, she's
has a long career ahead of her and we look forward to future
interviews.
